ABOUT SENSEI

Sensei Wayne Li began his martial arts journey at five years old, following in the footsteps of his father—the founder of Seikido. Growing up, he witnessed firsthand the passion and care his parents poured into each student and the Seikido community. This legacy of integrity, leadership, and service deeply inspired him and continues to shape his path today.

After graduating from the University of Victoria in 2014, Sensei returned home to teach Seikido full-time. Fueled by a deep sense of purpose, he dedicates himself not to personal accolades but to the growth and success of his students. For him, martial arts has never been solely about fighting techniques. “Seikido has always been about more than kicking and punching,” he explains. “It’s a path to become your best self.”

Now a father of two, Sensei’s passion for the art and its values has only grown stronger. He looks forward to watching his own children begin their Seikido journey, knowing they’ll step into a community that shaped his life and thousands before him. He believes the dojo is a rare and powerful place—where people from all walks of life come together to grow in body, mind, and spirit.

“As a Sensei,” he says, “I give my heart to every moment on the dojo floor. I want every student to know how important they are—that they belong, and that they are part of something meaningful. For over 45 years, Seikido has stood for timeless values. My parents had extremely humble beginnings - It has always been about doing the right thing and we are not changing this.”

What Sensei values most are the everyday victories: helping a shy student find their voice, supporting someone through a tough moment, or watching a class come together like family. “My greatest achievement is marked by the strength of our dojo and the people within it,” he says. "The future of Seikido is unstoppable - the next generation of Seikido students are incredible."

Sensei views Seikido as a form of extended education—a vital complement to academic and social life in a world where safety and resilience are more important than ever. “Basic training is essential, and Seikido offers so much more. Beyond being part of an incredible community, the training builds situational awareness, confidence, and discipline. Students learn how to show and receive respect, carry themselves in a formal setting, and overcome adversity with grace.”

While training can be intense and emotional, he says it is precisely through those moments that growth happens. “We are not about trophies or beating others—we are about competing with ourselves to be better than we were yesterday. If you train hard and train properly, these lessons will stay with you forever.”

With humility and unwavering commitment, Sensei continues to lead the dojo with pride, preserving his father's legacy while helping a new generation discover their own path through the art of Seikido.

“My son has practiced martial arts at Seikido Dojo for five years including two years of online practice during the pandemic. It’s hard for him to say farewell to Seikido since he will attend St. George’s junior school this September, and our family will be moving to Vancouver. Thank you Sensei Wayne so much for writing my son's reference letter, which was an important part of the admission. My son had a pleasant and memorable experience in this unique community. He learned martial arts, respect, responsibility, resilience, and friendship. He remembered all the hard work practice, excellent Grading performances, exciting Halloween parties and happy summer camps. Every Seikido student is taught, loved and cared for individually by Sensei and his team. They know every single student very well. According to the Peace Arch News, Seikido Dojo truly deserves the honour of being first place as “Best Martial Arts” in the Peninsula for seven consecutive years. Thank you Sensei and I sincerely wish Seikido Dojo a brighter future!”

"The Sensei teaches the kids not only martial art, techniques to protect themselves, but also a proactive attitude to do things well. The kids are proud of themselves when they arrive at the dojo on time decently. It might not be an issue in a short term, but will definitely play an important role to help them achieve a successful life in the future! My son is proud of any achievements with Seikido and will keep on the path even when he has to leave the Seikido family in the future!"
